Mechanical Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: San Francisco, United States; onsite five days a week, with travel to customer sites of up to 30%.

Base salary: $114,000–$280,000 per year, with potential equity awards.

Develops and deploys production-ready autonomous vehicle technology and autonomous haulage systems for mines, quarries, and construction sites.

What you will do

• Develop and integrate drive-by-wire hardware, including actuators and sensors, for autonomous haulage systems.
• Own mechanical designs from prototyping through assembly and installation on haul trucks weighing more than 100 tons.
• Develop bespoke hardware solutions for customer-specific problems and refine hardware kits for scalable installations.
• Create vehicle hardware kits for new vehicle platforms and contribute to system-level mechanical and electromechanical design.
• Produce 2D and 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of material, reports, and installation instructions.
• Develop testing and validation procedures, build prototypes, source components, and manage vendors.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
• At least 2 years of professional, non-internship mechanical design engineering experience.
• Experience with 3D CAD tools and designing for CNC machining, sheet-metal fabrication, and 3D printing.
• Hands-on experience building mechanical or electrical systems; machine shop or fabrication experience is preferred.
• Ability to resolve issues during mechanical engineering design, development, and execution.
• Automotive or heavy equipment experience and familiarity with robotic systems are strongly preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with hydraulic systems.
• Familiarity with OSHA, CE, CCC, ASME, or related regulatory standards.
