What you will do
- Educate patients about insurance coverage, benefits, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and estimated out-of-pocket costs.
- Assess patients' ability to pay and collect balances due before treatments and procedures.
- Provide counseling on payment arrangements and financial assistance for uninsured and underinsured patients by phone or in person.
- Review financial assistance applications using Federal Poverty Levels and established policies, obtain signatures, and route applications to the appropriate teams.
- Set up and maintain payment arrangements, document account activity in electronic medical record and practice management systems, and refer patients to social services when appropriate.
- Coordinate scheduling, treatment, billing, and financial counseling needs with front office, clinical, and patient accounting staff.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in financial counseling and/or accounts receivable collections, preferably in an oncology healthcare setting.
- Expertise in insurance policies and regulations related to medical billing.
- Working knowledge of government and managed care benefit structures, clinic procedures, medical practice, and medical terminology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, collaboration, problem-solving, prioritization, and time-management skills.
- Strong knowledge of Windows-based applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

- Medical oncology or radiation oncology experience.
