Senior Software Developer C++ (Program Principal Engineer) (Bioinformatics)

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, United States; full-time onsite at NIH-NCBI and/or remote work

What you will do

• Develop, implement, test, and maintain bioinformatics software and information retrieval systems.
• Build infrastructure for biological sequence annotation and data curation.
• Implement efficient bioinformatics algorithms with scientists, bioinformaticians, and developers.
• Support systems handling large-scale biological and biomedical datasets.
• Learn new technologies, maintain familiarity with internal systems, and share technical knowledge.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience handling large amounts of data or working in distributed computing environments.
• Programming experience in a Linux environment.
• Proficiency in C++.
• Experience with MS SQL Server and relational database design and optimization.
• Fluency in scripting languages such as Bash, csh, Perl, or Python.

Nice to have

• 5+ years of experience working with genetic and biological data.
• Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript and familiarity with their ecosystems.
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Docker or other containerization technologies.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit, integration, and regression testing; GitHub; or cloud technologies.
