Sr Bioinformatics Software Engineer (Bioinformatics)

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable software solutions for bioinformatics pipelines.
• Create and optimize data models and computational algorithms for assembly, mapping, variant calling, and variant annotation.
• Build and optimize ETL processes, APIs, database schemas, SQL queries, dashboards, and automated reports.
• Integrate data from disparate sources while maintaining accuracy, reliability, flexibility, and low code debt.
• Automate quality assurance through unit, integration, and testing suites using tools such as pytest, doctest, and Azure Pipelines.
• Collaborate with data analysts, business users, clinical reviewers, laboratory personnel, and software developers to deliver integrations.

Requirements

• Must be based in the United States and work remotely.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
• At least five years of software development experience, including implementing production-ready software solutions from scratch.
• Deep expertise in at least two programming languages, including Python, Perl, R, Bash, Java, C++, or Groovy.
• Proficiency with SQL Server, NoSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, Elasticsearch, API and microservice development, object-oriented programming, Git, and CI/CD.
• Experience with Linux, package management, containerization, unit and integration testing, documentation, and maintainable software design.

Nice to have

• Experience collaborating with laboratory scientists, computational biologists, or clinical reviewers.
• Knowledge of Azure, HPC clusters, SLURM, Kubernetes, GCP, workflow orchestration tools, Nextflow, Airflow, or Snakemake.
