Technical Lead – Program Principal Engineer (C++)

Location: Bethesda, Maryland; full-time onsite at NIH-NCBI and/or remote work

What you will do

• Lead the program's software development teams within an Agile framework.
• Direct software development across the full lifecycle, from vision and architecture through implementation, production rollout, and operations.
• Coordinate with scientists, bioinformaticians, developers, program leadership, and technical program management.
• Guide the development of genomic data and bioinformatics solutions supporting research into infectious diseases and pathogen surveillance.
• Estimate development work, manage delivery schedules, and mitigate technical and staffing risks.
• Maintain technical documentation, coach team members, research new technologies, and ensure high code quality.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software development experience in a Linux environment.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
• Proficiency in at least one of Java, C, or C++ and one scripting language such as Bash or Python.
• Experience with AWS or GCP cloud data storage and processing platforms, SQL databases, and structured data formats including XML, JSON, and CSV.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, integration testing, and regression testing.
• Proven Agile team management, coaching, troubleshooting, communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with genetic and biological data.
• Experience with Docker or other containerization and software packaging technologies.
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
• Experience with scientific workflow engines and DataOps.
