Senior Software Developer (C++)

Location: Bethesda, Maryland; full-time onsite at NIH-NCBI and/or remote work in the United States

Salary: $115,000–$150,000 per year, commensurate with experience and location.

What you will do

• Develop, implement, test, and maintain NCBI bioinformatics software and information retrieval systems.
• Build infrastructure for biological sequence annotation, data curation, production applications, APIs, and services.
• Implement efficient bioinformatics algorithms with scientists, bioinformaticians, and developers.
• Work with large-scale data, distributed computing environments, and multiple cloud providers.
• Learn new technologies, maintain familiarity with internal systems, and share knowledge with the team.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience handling large amounts of data or working in a distributed computing environment.
• Programming experience in a Linux environment.
• Proficiency in C++.
• Experience with MS SQL Server, relational database design, and database optimization.
• Fluency in scripting languages such as Bash, csh, Perl, or Python.

Nice to have

• 5+ years of experience working with genetic and biological data.
• Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript and familiarity with their ecosystems.
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and testing.
• Experience using GitHub and cloud technologies.
