Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, with a minimum of two days onsite each week at the downtown office

Base pay: $120,000–$175,000 per year, with actual compensation based on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

• Own core backend features spanning client interactions, database queries, APIs, and scalability challenges.
• Ship stable, readable, well-tested code supporting the full hirify.global business.
• Drive projects from ambiguity through completion, including feedback, edge cases, and unfamiliar technical areas.
• Communicate clearly through problem statements, messages, pull request descriptions, questions, and status updates.
• Balance product and technical needs through open collaboration across disciplines.
• Use feedback from mentors and peers to continuously improve.

Requirements

• Evidence of having shipped a real product or project professionally or independently.
• Clear, concise written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify complex topics.
• Good judgment, ownership of outcomes, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to feedback.
• Solid understanding of web fundamentals, including browsers, networks, asynchronous behavior, and application state.
• Fluency with AI coding tools.

Nice to have

• Ability to read and reason about TypeScript and modern web code.
• Experience with GraphQL, infrastructure as code, Docker, Google Cloud Platform, or Amazon Web Services.
• Experience building with LLM APIs, agents, or AI-assisted developer workflows.
• Experience writing, teaching, or learning in public through a blog, repository, or similar work.
