CESM Software Engineer II

Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States; all positions must be performed within the U.S., excluding U.S. Territories. Flexible arrangements may apply; hybrid staff are expected to work on-site approximately three days per week. Relocation assistance may be available.

Salary: $83,299–$104,127 per year

What you will do

• Enhance the CESM modeling ecosystem through performance improvements, memory reductions, GPU portability, and other modernization priorities.
• Collaborate with software engineers, scientists, stakeholders, and the Community Software Facility on model changes and integration.
• Review existing modeling software to assess structure, quality, maintainability, and technical limitations.
• Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies through profiling, testing, benchmarking, and code analysis.
• Document findings, proposed changes, and technical decisions for scientists and engineers.
• Explore newer programming languages, paradigms, tools, and techniques for software modernization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field with typically four to eight years of progressive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with at least one compiled language, such as Fortran, C, or C++.
• Ability to identify performance bottlenecks and technical limitations through profiling, testing, and code analysis.
• Ability to modernize legacy software, update libraries or frameworks, and apply current development standards.
• Experience with software requirements analysis, systems design, and the software development process.
• Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with parallel programming, including MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, or JAX.
• Knowledge of numerical methods, data structures, and algorithms.
