Field Chemist I (Environmental)

Location: San Jose, California, USA; work takes place indoors and outdoors at customer sites, with travel to customer locations.

Pay range: $31.70–$43.62; the actual range depends on the hiring locality.

What you will do

• Collect, characterize, package, and prepare customer waste for final disposal.
• Assist with the safe transportation of waste in accordance with federal regulations.
• Prepare and maintain packing lists, waste labels, shipping documents, and other customer paperwork.
• Support onsite inspections, waste collection, chemical dispensing, inventory management, housekeeping, and outbound waste shipments.
• Identify suspected waste contents through internal sampling procedures and field-screening tests.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, environmental science, or equivalent experience.
• Basic knowledge of chemistry principles and practices.
• Understanding of federal and state environmental and transportation regulations.
• Valid driver’s license and an MVR that meets company policy standards.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with an 8-hour refresher, or ability to complete the course upon hire.
• Ability to pass respirator-fit testing and regularly lift or move objects weighing 40 pounds or more.

Nice to have

• DOT and RCRA experience.
• Experience with waste sampling, waste characterizations, and waste profiles.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, documentation, and customer-interaction skills.
