Underwriter I, Retail Property (Insurance)

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; primarily office-based with in-person collaboration

Salary: $62,000–$82,500 annual base salary, plus eligibility for a bonus under the applicable incentive plan.

What you will do

• Underwrite a specific line of business within Retail Property and evaluate, prioritize, and select submissions.
• Identify risk exposures, hazards, claims experience, and appropriate risk controls.
• Analyze claims, quantify losses, and apply underwriting discipline to price risks and minimize exposure.
• Issue quotes and policies while meeting file, service, compliance, and underwriting standards.
• Offer profitable coverage terms and conditions that address customer needs.
• Build relationships with clients and brokers while capturing market intelligence and broker feedback.

Requirements

• 1+ years of relevant professional experience; commercial insurance company, agency, or brokerage experience is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
• Experience in sales, marketing, and relationship building.
• Working knowledge of Retail Property products is preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication, financial, analytical, critical-thinking, negotiation, prioritization, and time-management skills.
• Comfort working with financial statements, analytical tools, and technology in a dynamic environment.
