TL;DR
Senior Materials Engineer (Metallurgy): Performing metallurgical sample preparation, materials analysis, and failure investigations in a manufacturing laboratory with an accent on SEM, microscopy, spectroscopy, hardness testing, and root-cause resolution. Focus on troubleshooting laboratory and process equipment, authoring rigorous technical reports, and driving material quality and product reliability improvements across manufacturing operations.

Location: Sidney, Ohio, USA; primarily onsite at the Metallurgical Engineering laboratory. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM or 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Travel may be required up to 5%.

What you will do

  • Prepare metallurgical samples through cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching.
  • Analyze microstructure, inclusions, defects, and chemical composition using SEM, X-ray fluorescence, optical and digital microscopy, optical emission spectroscopy, and metallographic techniques.
  • Conduct hardness testing and interpret results against material specifications.
  • Lead failure analysis investigations, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and calibrate laboratory and process equipment.
  • Write technical reports and collaborate with production, quality, engineering teams, suppliers, and internal customers on material quality, process control, and product reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a closely related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive metallurgical engineering experience in manufacturing or an R&D environment.
  • Hands-on expertise in metallurgical sample preparation, metallographic analysis, SEM, optical microscopy, metallography, hardness testing, and failure analysis.
  • Experience troubleshooting laboratory and process equipment and writing clear technical reports.
  • Experience in iron or aluminum foundry operations, flat-rolled steel production, powder metallurgy, or an equivalent environment.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or metal-focused Materials Science.
  • Experience with tribology principles and tribological testing.
  • Experience mentoring technical staff.
