TL;DR
Data Scientist (Insurance): Building statistical and machine learning models for insurance business needs and regulatory requirements with an accent on large-scale data analysis, model documentation, and stakeholder communication. Focus on designing new modeling approaches, monitoring model performance, and implementing iterative improvements across classification, regression, clustering, and deep learning applications.
Location: Lansing, Michigan, United States; hybrid work with up to 3 days per week from home after initial in-person training and regular office attendance.

What you will do
- Build statistical and machine learning models addressing business needs and regulatory requirements.
- Analyze large, complex datasets and develop expertise in data structures and metrics.
- Conduct ad-hoc analyses and present quantitative findings to stakeholders at multiple levels.
- Design, prototype, and implement new approaches to solve analytical problems.
- Collaborate with software developers, architects, and business leaders.
- Document models clearly, monitor performance, and implement iterative improvements.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, operations research, economics, or engineering.
- Proficiency in SQL or another data-querying language.
- Understanding of statistical and machine learning techniques, including classification, regression, clustering, feature engineering, decision trees, gradient boosting, and deep learning.
- Experience with data science tools including R, Python, TensorFlow, SQL, scikit-learn, and Keras.
- 2–4 years of professional experience building models with large datasets.
- Ability to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship and to work in the Lansing home office when required.
Nice to have
- PhD in a quantitative discipline.
