Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Hybrid in Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney, Australia

What you will do

• Modernize legacy components, deliver new product features, and contribute to long-term architectural direction.
• Identify technical debt and improve platform performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Build and maintain secure, scalable RESTful APIs for customers and partners, including versioning and monitoring instrumentation.
• Write reliable tests, conduct rigorous code reviews, and improve CI/CD and release processes.
• Mentor junior engineers through pairing, code reviews, and technical coaching.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software development experience with Java and/or Kotlin.
• Strong object-oriented design and design patterns knowledge.
• Experience building backend services and tools within web application ecosystems.
• Ability to provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for small projects.
• Strong data modelling skills and significant experience with relational databases and SQL; Hibernate is preferred.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, logical reasoning, and ability to explain complex concepts clearly.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with networking concepts such as IP routing or MPLS.
