Math Major Software Developer (COBOL)

Location: Lansing, Michigan, United States; hybrid work is available up to 3 days per week from home after initial in-person training, and candidates must be able to work in the Lansing tech office.

What you will do

• Define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain software programs and applications.
• Develop and support applications for new and existing systems using COBOL.
• Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and brainstorming sessions.
• Create program and system documentation.
• Analyze and resolve software errors accurately and promptly.
• Consult with users, architects, project leaders, and management to resolve issues and propose alternatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Math, Actuarial Science, Economics, Statistics, or another logic-based field is preferred.
• Strong academic performance and an interest in learning software development.
• Ability to learn and use the tools and software development techniques adopted by the IT Division.
• Ability to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
• Ability to work in the Lansing, Michigan tech office after initial in-person training.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of COBOL, DB2, TSO, databases, or SQL.
• Exposure to R, SAS, Python, MATLAB, C, C++, or Java.
• Enthusiasm for finding and implementing solutions to new challenges.
