Director of Energy Storage, O&M (BESS)

Location: Fully remote or hybrid, with regular in-office presence in San Diego, CA, or Sacramento, CA; applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship now or in the future.

Salary: $172,025–$215,032 annually

What you will do

• Launch and grow a BESS operations and maintenance business line, defining its strategy, operating model, services, pricing, and commercial frameworks.
• Integrate BESS operations with Performance Engineering, Compliance, Safety, SCADA, the Operations Control Center, and Business Development.
• Oversee multisite operational delivery, maintenance planning, outage coordination, troubleshooting, site onboarding, and contractual compliance.
• Develop BESS operating procedures, commissioning acceptance criteria, maintenance standards, risk controls, and emergency response protocols.
• Build and lead a BESS-focused team, including recruiting, training, competency development, and performance management.
• Manage OEM partnerships, service agreements, warranties, budgets, forecasts, lifecycle costs, and executive-level portfolio reporting.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in utility-scale energy operations, including at least 3 years in leadership roles.
• Experience starting or scaling a team, division, or operational function.
• Expertise in BESS technologies, power electronics, SCADA systems, and grid-connected assets.
• Experience managing multisite operations and complex technical teams.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
• Strong capabilities in strategic planning, cross-functional integration, commercial negotiations, risk governance, and operational excellence.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy systems, or a related technical field.
• Experience with hybrid renewable and storage assets.
• Background in reliability engineering, asset management, or performance analytics.
• Experience in entrepreneurial, startup, or rapid-scale operations.
