Chief Data Officer (AI)

Location: United States, remote

Market compensation: around $240K median, with strong performers reaching $400K–$470K.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end data strategy, including infrastructure, pipeline architecture, governance, quality, and analytics.
• Lead and scale data science and engineering teams, set hiring standards, mentor senior individual contributors, and build a culture of experimentation and accountability.
• Partner with C-suite and business leaders to identify data initiatives, prioritize investments, and communicate insights that influence business outcomes.
• Drive data governance, security, and compliance frameworks that support growth without creating bottlenecks.
• Integrate AI and ML capabilities into products and operations to enable automation and predictive decision-making.
• Build the modern data platform, including cloud infrastructure, tooling, self-service analytics, metrics, KPIs, and dashboards.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data science, data engineering, or analytics, including 5+ years in leadership or staff-level roles building and scaling data functions.
• Experience shipping production data systems such as pipelines, warehouses, data lakes, or real-time analytics platforms, and managing technical debt at scale.
• Track record of translating data capabilities into measurable business value through cross-functional work with product, finance, and operations.
• Strong foundation in SQL, statistics, and data architecture, with the ability to work through technical details while setting vision.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and modern data tooling; familiarity with ML engineering, MLOps, or AI integration is advantageous.
• Excellent communication skills for explaining data concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders and navigating organizational change.
