TL;DR
Special Education Teaching Fellow (Education): Co-teaching and independently teaching high school students while adapting rigorous curricula and supporting individual learning needs with an accent on special education instruction, assessment, and student development. Focus on planning with lead teachers, building positive relationships with students and families, and using feedback and professional development to improve classroom practice.

Location: Halifax, North Carolina, USA. Full-time, school-based schedule: Monday, Thursday, and Friday 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 7:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Salary: $41,000 per year ($39,000 base salary plus a $2,000 high school teacher supplement).

What you will do

  • Co-teach with an experienced teacher for half of the instructional day and teach independently with support for the remaining half.
  • Co-plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned special education instruction.
  • Adapt curricula, lessons, unit plans, rubrics, and assessments to support individual learning needs.
  • Provide daily student feedback and communicate progress with families, teachers, and staff.
  • Build positive classroom relationships and contribute to a supportive school culture.
  • Participate in school operations, events, professional development, classroom coverage, and other student-support activities.

Requirements

  • A conferred Bachelor’s degree is required by the start date.
  • Commitment to the KIPP NC mission and to improving outcomes for students from economically marginalized communities.
  • Openness to feedback, reflection, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Strong organization, professionalism, work ethic, flexibility, perseverance, resourcefulness, and teamwork.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and develop strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to stand and actively monitor classrooms for more than 8 hours daily and lift 50 pounds or more as needed; criminal background check required.
