Director of Engineering (Energy Storage)

Location: Fully remote or hybrid, with regular in-office presence in San Diego, California; up to 50% travel throughout the United States. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship now or in the future.

Salary: $170,074–$226,199 per year.

What you will do

• Lead, hire, mentor, and develop the Energy Storage Engineering team.
• Manage department goals, budgets, performance metrics, resource allocation, and project delivery.
• Oversee energy storage engineering standards, procurement specifications, quality control, and compliance with owner, vendor, AHJ, and project requirements.
• Lead interconnection system design, utility approvals, ISO and NERC compliance, and energization planning.
• Resolve design and construction challenges with engineering, procurement, project management, business development, and construction stakeholders.
• Drive adoption of new technologies, value engineering strategies, and customer-focused solutions while representing engineering as a technical subject matter expert.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
• 10+ years of engineering experience focused on energy storage, renewables, or power systems in an EPC or owner/engineer environment.
• 5+ years of management experience with a record of leading multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience designing and delivering utility-scale energy storage projects, including protection and control systems, relay settings, and NERC compliance.
• Deep knowledge of EPC engineering workflows, design deliverables, submittals, document control, and coordination with engineering partners.
• Ability to travel up to 50% and existing U.S. work authorization without current or future employer sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Expertise in NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, and utility standards.
• Experience with FERC Order 841, IEEE 1547, grid operations, and regulatory requirements.
• Knowledge of UL9540, UL9540A, and NFPA 855 fire protection requirements.
