TL;DR
Staff Compute Hardware Engineer (Embedded Edge Compute): Designing subsystem-level compute, memory, I/O, and networking hardware for next-generation DNA sequencers with an accent on edge deployment, power and thermal constraints, and high-speed connectivity. Focus on board bring-up, Linux and firmware debugging, secure boot, OTA updates, and validating signal integrity, EMI/EMC, and environmental performance.

Location: San Diego, California, United States; onsite

Salary: $155,600–$233,400 annual base salary, plus eligible bonus, commission, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

  • Define hardware requirements and specifications for compute, memory, I/O, and networking subsystems in edge-deployed DNA sequencing platforms.
  • Evaluate CPUs, systems-on-module components, memory, PHYs, switches, storage, and vendor solutions against workload, power, environmental, and connectivity constraints.
  • Implement wired Ethernet networking subsystems supporting 1G, 2.5G, and 10G use cases.
  • Debug hardware and hardware-software issues across the Linux kernel, drivers, device tree, firmware, and bootloaders, including root cause analysis.
  • Lead board bring-up and contribute to DVT, signal integrity, thermal, power, EMI/EMC, and environmental validation plans.
  • Design for remote deployment through secure boot, OTA updates, remote diagnostics, and long product lifecycles while collaborating with electrical, firmware, and Linux systems teams.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience designing embedded or edge compute platforms, including x86 CPUs, DDR/LPDDR memory, and PCIe.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent experience; PhD candidates typically need 3+ years of experience.
  • Experience with Ethernet PHYs, switches, 10GbE, and networking and routing fundamentals.
  • Strong Linux expertise covering device drivers, device tree, networking, and debugging tools such as perf, ftrace, ethtool, tcpdump, dmesg, sysfs, and procfs.
  • Experience with BIOS, U-Boot, UEFI, secure boot, TPM/TEE, PCB/PCA design, high-speed signal integrity, power delivery, and thermal design.
  • Proven board bring-up, DVT, V&V documentation, cross-stack root cause analysis, communication, and collaborative ownership.
