Principal Software Engineer - Embedded Platform Software Development (Networking)

Location: Onsite at an HPE office in the United States, with the listed salary range covering California

Salary: USD 172,000–349,000 annual base salary in California, with possible variable incentives.

What you will do

• Design and develop Linux-based platform software for high-performance routing and switching systems.
• Build infrastructure for hardware discovery, initialization, inventory, environmental monitoring, interface management, telemetry, and chassis services.
• Lead software bring-up for platforms based on custom ASICs, NPUs, and merchant silicon.
• Develop hardware abstraction layers, device drivers, and hardware-management services for multiple platform generations.
• Collaborate with ASIC, hardware, systems, manufacturing, and software teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Lead root-cause analysis, improve platform resiliency and observability, and provide technical mentorship.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of system software development experience in networking, embedded, or infrastructure platforms.
• Strong hands-on experience with C, modern C++ including C++11 or newer, and Linux systems programming.
• Experience developing software for routers, switches, firewalls, networking appliances, or similar infrastructure products.
• Experience bringing up new hardware platforms from early development through production and debugging hardware/software integration issues.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with routing, switching, network operating systems, chassis systems, or distributed networking platforms.
• Experience with networking ASICs, network processors, switch silicon, SmartNICs, Ethernet MAC/PHY, optics, SerDes, gearbox devices, or FEC technologies.
• Knowledge of Broadcom, Marvell, Silicon One, Innovium, Barefoot, PCIe, I2C, SPI, MDIO, FPGA, or CPLD technologies.
• Experience designing reusable hardware-independent abstractions for multiple hardware platforms and product generations.
• Experience with high availability, ISSU, redundancy, resiliency, monitoring, observability, and large-scale chassis systems.
