R&D Scientist (Materials Science)

Location: Ashby, United Kingdom; laboratory-based work at the Ashby site

Salary: Starting from £36,000 per annum, plus a performance-related bonus scheme

What you will do

• Develop coating, potting, and thermal interface materials.
• Conduct tensile, rheology, electrical, and application screening, including automated spraying and dispensing.
• Prepare samples, data packs, standard operating procedures, risk assessments, and COSHH assessments.
• Calibrate equipment and maintain R&D and quality databases.
• Manage laboratory consumables and raw-material replenishment, including purchase requisitions.
• Maintain laboratory housekeeping, waste disposal, health and safety, and quality-system standards.

Requirements

• Higher education in a scientific subject.
• Previous laboratory experience and comfort working in a laboratory while wearing PPE.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, reproducibility, problem-solving, and practical prioritization skills.
• Knowledge of Six Sigma and design-of-experiments problem-solving methodologies.
• Competence with Microsoft Office or similar software.
• Ability to communicate effectively, work independently, and collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in materials science or chemistry.
• Industrial experience with polyurethane, epoxy, or silicone materials.
• Experience with tensile testing, rheology, and electrical screening.
