Materials Scientist (AI and Materials Discovery): Automating materials research by improving scientific data, building research software, and developing tools for experimental and computational teams with an accent on materials databases, characterization metadata, and LLM agent workflows. Focus on investigating agent failure modes, restructuring data around agent reasoning, strengthening laboratory data collection, and creating evaluations of agent performance.
Location: On-site in Menlo Park, California, United States; a San Francisco location is planned soon.
Compensation: $250,000–$350,000 per year plus equity

What you will do
- Collaborate with experimental and computational scientists on active materials research problems.
- Investigate agent traces to identify data errors and agentic failure modes, then address those failures at the source.
- Restructure and re-architect databases covering laboratory experiments, characterization data, and computations.
- Work with hardware and automation teams to improve the robustness of data collection.
- Build research software and tools for laboratory environments from scientific requirements.
- Create evaluations to measure LLM agent performance.
Requirements
- 4+ years of research or industry experience in experimental or computational materials science.
- Experience working with data at scale.
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong domain knowledge of materials characterization techniques and relevant metadata.
- Ability to work on-site in Menlo Park, California.
