TL;DR
Optical Coating Engineering Technician (Thin Film Coating): Providing technical support for vacuum and thin-film coating operations while developing new coated products and improving production processes with an accent on coating trials, product testing, equipment operation, and technician training. Focus on troubleshooting production coaters, applying vacuum systems knowledge, identifying root causes, and coordinating cross-functional process improvements.

Location: Faribault, Minnesota, United States. Full-time, second shift Monday–Friday, 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.; occasional work outside scheduled hours may be required to support a 24/5 production operation.

Salary: $26.00–$30.00 per hour, plus a $1.00 per hour shift premium.

What you will do

  • Provide technical guidance, training, coaching, and performance feedback to Process Technicians.
  • Support new product development and improvements to coating processes through development-coater samples, trials, and production-coater activities.
  • Perform optical, mechanical, and environmental product testing and participate in developing new standards.
  • Monitor production coaters and lead or participate in troubleshooting efforts.
  • Work with customers, vendors, Maintenance, and support groups on new products, technology, and preventative maintenance.
  • Use technical literature, data, and risk-management practices to support process decisions and patent activities.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, in technology, equipment, or product development, including substantial experience with vacuum or thin-film coating.
  • Hands-on knowledge of vacuum theory, systems, and hardware, plus basic mechanical and electrical systems knowledge.
  • Ability to operate development and production coaters and use department-specific software, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Experience training and motivating others, leading cross-functional work, and communicating effectively at multiple organizational levels.
  • Strong problem-solving, root-cause identification, troubleshooting, workload management, and project-organization skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, spreadsheets, and related software; ability to work effectively in a diverse workplace.

Nice to have

  • Five or more years of relevant experience.
  • Optical modeling and coating design experience.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma tools and formal Six Sigma training.
