TL;DR
Military and Family Life School Counselor (Child and Youth Behavioral Health): Providing non-medical, short-term counseling and behavioral health support to children and youth of military service members in schools, youth programs, and military installations with an accent on assessment, consultation, referrals, and family guidance. Focus on coordinating with installation personnel, managing duty-to-warn situations, responding to critical incidents, and maintaining confidential activity reporting.

Location: Hampton, Virginia, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis; work is performed at military installations, DoD and community schools, youth programs, and other assigned facilities.

Salary: $59,922–$100,280 annual base salary, depending on location, skills, experience, education, and other permitted factors.

What you will do

  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling, assessment, action planning, referrals, and follow-up for children and youth of military service members.
  • Support DoD and community school staff, parents, youth programs, and summer camps through consultation, training, and health and wellness presentations.
  • Build relationships with installation personnel, schools, and community resources to coordinate behavioral health services and referrals.
  • Document counselor activity daily through smartphone or web applications while maintaining client confidentiality and anonymity.
  • Manage duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations according to DoD protocols, participate in supervision, and respond to critical incidents and urgent requests.
  • Participate in training, quality improvement initiatives, pilot programs, studies, and other assigned contract activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field, behavioral health, or social work.
  • Current unrestricted independent counseling license from a US state, the District of Columbia, a US territory, or commonwealth, with authority to practice independently.
  • At least two years of post-licensure clinical experience and experience working with children and youth in child or adolescent development/psychology.
  • School-assigned counselors must have prior work experience in a school setting.
  • Must prove US citizenship and be fluent in English.
  • Must pass CNACI, Installation Records Check, criminal history, and FBI fingerprint checks; a valid US state driver’s license is required unless waived.
