Underwriting Manager - Stop Loss (Health Insurance)

Location: Chicago, Illinois HQ; hybrid schedule with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote

Base pay: $102,000–$184,300 annually, plus eligibility for an annual incentive bonus.

What you will do

• Quote and rate proposals and renewal projections for group health and stop-loss business.
• Approve cases within established underwriting authority guidelines.
• Underwrite and price different funding options, products, and complex accounts.
• Present recommendations and underwriting results to customers, consultants, brokers, and senior management.
• Coordinate initiatives across departments, lead staff, and manage project assignments.
• Identify and implement process improvements across underwriting operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience underwriting small or large accounts and working directly with customers, consultants, or brokers, or 6 years of equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years of experience underwriting higher-complexity cases, or demonstrated capability to meet the role’s responsibilities.
• Experience with underwriting, pricing, group health funding options, renewal and prospective underwriting processes, and financial arrangements.
• Knowledge of managed care, health care and group insurance products, as well as state and federal legislation relevant to underwriting.
• Strong presentation, communication, interpersonal, independent judgment, problem resolution, work management, and project management skills.
• PC proficiency, including Word and Excel; ability to interact with BCBSA and member plans.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of the Blue System and the ability to price national business.
• Experience rotating across other underwriting market segments.
