Senior Systems Engineer II (Linux): Building, packaging, updating, and observing secure on-premises appliance software for critical-industry networks with an accent on reproducible releases, resilient update mechanisms, and edge processing. Focus on designing rollback-safe fleet rollouts, supply-chain integrity, air-gapped operation, and local observability for constrained infrastructure.

Salary: $150,000–$159,000 per year

Company

hirify.global builds secure, private network infrastructure for critical industries, including on-premises appliances deployed in industrial and infrastructure environments.

What you will do

  • Own the build, packaging, release, signing, and provenance processes for on-premises OS images, packages, container images, and release bundles.
  • Design and operate reliable appliance updates with staging, verification, rollback, cohorts, canaries, and support for constrained or air-gapped deployments.
  • Extend appliance runtimes for local telemetry, preprocessing, buffering, store-and-forward workflows, and local decisioning.
  • Define edge-versus-cloud responsibilities while protecting fixed appliance resources and network data paths.
  • Build appliance-in-the-loop testing, upgrade and downgrade validation, local observability, and evidence-producing security workflows.
  • Partner with field, support, security, compliance, product, and engineering teams; write operational documentation and mentor IC1 and IC2 engineers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional engineering experience shipping software on infrastructure that the engineering team does not operate.
  • Ownership of release and update mechanisms for edge, appliance, embedded, or on-premises enterprise systems.
  • Deep Linux systems knowledge, including systemd, boot and init, filesystems and partitions, kernels, package lifecycles, and distribution assembly.
  • Strong packaging and distribution experience with Debian/apt, OCI images, image-based or A/B updates, artifact signing, and repository operation.
  • Proficiency in at least one systems-capable language: Go, Rust, Python, or C; plus Ansible, Terraform, containers, CI/CD, and network fundamentals.
  • Must be based in the United States; participation in an on-call rotation and 15–20% travel for on-premises work are expected.

Nice to have

  • Experience with OT, ICS, industrial, air-gapped, intermittently connected, or security-focused environments.
  • Knowledge of IEC 62443, NERC CIP, FIPS-validated cryptography, FedRAMP-adjacent work, SLSA, in-toto, Sigstore, or SBOM workflows.
  • Experience with lightweight Kubernetes, atomic Linux updates, on-premises virtualization, hardware qualification, edge telemetry, VPN, ZTNA, or secure remote access products.

Culture & Benefits

  • Remote work with travel for on-premises deployments.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Unlimited paid time off and parental leave.
  • Full medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Performance bonus and equity eligibility.
  • Collaborative engineering environment with support for learning, feedback, and mentoring.
