Regulatory Counsel, AI Regulation, US (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California, or New York City, New York; hybrid work with at least 3 days per week in the office

What you will do

• Lead in-house legal counseling on US AI regulation, including applicability analysis, regulatory readiness, day-to-day advice, and compliance-program design.
• Own compliance deliverables such as safety and transparency frameworks, model documentation, and incident-reporting requirements.
• Track US federal, state, and relevant international legislative, regulatory, and standards developments and assess their impact on products and business operations.
• Support non-contentious engagement with AI regulators, enforcement agencies, and standards bodies, including notifications, information requests, reports, and standards processes.
• Partner with Policy and Policy Legal on pre-legislative and rulemaking engagement, including comment letters and regulatory submissions.
• Coordinate with Litigation, Regulatory Investigations, Legal, Compliance, Safeguards, Security, Research, and product teams on regulatory enforcement and global frontier AI compliance.

Requirements

• JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one US state bar.
• Hands-on experience advising a technology business on emerging regulatory regimes, from initial statutory analysis through documented compliance positions and shipped artifacts.
• Experience engaging with regulators, enforcement agencies, or standards bodies in a non-contentious supervisory capacity.
• Experience drafting regulatory compliance policies, submissions, or published compliance frameworks.
• Ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to technical, policy, product, and business audiences.
• Ability to work from the San Francisco or New York office at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• 8–12 years of regulatory legal experience with substantial technology regulation experience and exposure to AI-specific frameworks.
• Experience with California SB 53, the Colorado AI Act, the EU AI Act, or the GPAI Code of Practice.
• Experience at a frontier AI company, large technology platform, or hyper-scaling technology business.
• Familiarity with privacy, data protection, consumer protection, product safety, export controls, model evaluation, capability testing, or AI safety.
• Background combining private practice and in-house experience, with strong organizational and cross-functional collaboration skills.
