Counsel (Fintech)

Location: New York City, New York; office work Monday through Thursday

Base salary: $120,000–$170,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Manage litigation, investigations, regulatory inquiries, examinations, customer complaints, FINRA arbitrations, privacy claims, and civil litigation, including oversight of outside counsel.
• Partner with Compliance on SEC, FINRA, CFTC, and NFA obligations, including AML, regulatory filings, registrations, policies, procedures, training, and regulatory developments.
• Expand AI governance for customer-facing products and internal tools through policies, quality assurance processes, use-case assessments, and monitoring of emerging laws and guidance.
• Own privacy matters including notices, consumer requests, data mapping, and record retention, while partnering with Engineering and IT on cybersecurity, fraud prevention, incident response, and customer remediation.
• Advise Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams from concept through launch and draft, review, and negotiate vendor, marketing, data, and other commercial agreements.
• Build legal playbooks, templates, tools, systems, and processes, using AI to improve legal and compliance efficiency.

Requirements

• J.D. from an ABA-approved law school or foreign equivalent.
• Admission to at least one U.S. bar and good standing.
• 2–5 years of legal experience, ideally including experience at a top law firm and in-house at a technology or financial services company or startup.
• Experience handling a broad range of legal matters.
• Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence senior stakeholders.
• High integrity and the ability to balance legal and compliance obligations with business objectives.
• Comfort with ambiguity and pressure, with the ability to identify, prioritize, and resolve issues quickly and independently.
• Track record of quickly learning and using software such as project management and compliance tools.
• Experience using AI tools responsibly to improve legal processes and systems, or demonstrated willingness to learn.

Nice to have

• Experience with litigation, arbitration, especially FINRA arbitration, regulatory examinations, or investigations.
• Experience with broker-dealer, investment adviser, or futures regulation.
• Experience with privacy, cybersecurity, or AI governance programs.
• Experience negotiating commercial agreements, including vendor, marketing, and market data agreements.
• Experience partnering with Compliance teams to build efficient and effective compliance systems and processes.
