Build Engineer - Bazel - #4770

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States. Flexible office/home arrangement with a minimum of 60% or 24 hours of the work week on-site; Tuesdays and Thursdays are encouraged on-site days. Interviews before the September headquarters move may take place in Menlo Park.

Salary: $136,000–$180,000 annual base salary, with potential additional bonus or incentives.

What you will do

• Own and improve Bazel-based monorepo workflows, including build rules, testing, dependency management, caching, and diagnostics.
• Improve CI performance, reliability, observability, flaky-test handling, and pipeline maintainability.
• Partner with engineering and research teams to reduce friction across local development, builds, tests, releases, and tooling.
• Build internal tools, automation, self-service workflows, CLIs, and reusable developer-platform patterns.
• Diagnose complex build and CI failures across Go, Python, TypeScript, and Java codebases.
• Collaborate on AWS and Kubernetes infrastructure and use AI coding agents responsibly for investigation and prototyping.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience with build systems, CI/CD, developer productivity, or platform tooling.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with a large-scale build system such as Bazel, Buck, Pants, Gradle, or CMake.
• 2+ years of experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or a comparable system.
• 3+ years of professional coding experience in Go, Python, TypeScript, or Java.
• 1+ year of hands-on experience with AWS and containerized workloads on Kubernetes.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Production Bazel experience in a large, multi-language monorepo, including rules, toolchains, remote caching, remote execution, test sharding, or build optimization.
• Experience with hermetic and reproducible builds, dependency management, test infrastructure, and CI flakiness reduction.
• Experience building internal CLIs, release tooling, self-service platforms, or developer-productivity metrics.
• Experience supporting scientific, research, or data-intensive teams and Python packaging or container-image workflows.
• Experience mentoring engineers or driving adoption of tooling and standards.
