TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Vacuum Systems (fusion vacuum systems): Designing, analyzing, testing, and commissioning advanced vacuum systems for pulser-driven inertial fusion components with an accent on high-vacuum engineering, cryogenic particle-free environments, and electrical integration. Focus on sizing pumps, seals, ducts, and valves, characterizing material outgassing and permeability, and solving field issues in complex vacuum equipment.

Location: Fremont, California, United States; onsite commissioning of vacuum equipment and systems is required.

Pay range: $138,100–$219,900 USD per year, plus equity and benefits.

Company

hirify.global is a fusion-energy startup developing pulser-driven inertial fusion systems and components intended to deliver abundant, affordable, clean energy.

What you will do

  • Design, analyze, and test advanced vacuum systems for target-area chambers and diagnostics.
  • Select and size pumps, seals, ducts, valves, and other vacuum components for particle-free cryogenic environments.
  • Lead engineering activities from concept development through prototyping, testing, and onsite commissioning.
  • Support high-voltage electrical switching operations and testing inside vacuum chambers.
  • Run experiments to characterize material outgassing, permeability, and vacuum compatibility.
  • Resolve field issues and negotiate vacuum-system design requirements with multidisciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, or at least 10 years of specialized senior technician experience with system design, independent testing, and complex troubleshooting.
  • Proven expertise in the design, analysis, and construction of high-vacuum systems.
  • Hands-on experience with vacuum chambers, pumps, seals, valves, ducts, and cleanroom techniques.
  • Experience integrating electrical testing with vacuum and pressurized systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPVC and B31.3 codes.
  • Experience with radioactive or toxic gas vacuum systems, novel vacuum pumps, or material characterization is valued.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree or PhD.
  • Experience setting up wiring, circuits, and control systems and diagnosing electrical malfunctions with testing tools.
  • Machining and CAD design experience, including Creo.

Culture & Benefits

  • Equity plan for eligible employees.
  • 6% employer 401(k) matching.
  • Paid time off, including sick leave, vacation, and paid family leave.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
