Japanese Linguist (AI)

Location: Tokyo, Japan; hybrid work with office attendance twice a week

What you will do

• Act as a Japanese linguistic consultant for Research, Product, Sales, and other stakeholders.
• Test and evaluate DeepL products and features before and after launch.
• Assess the linguistic quality of human- and machine-generated data and identify machine-translation error patterns.
• Evaluate freelance linguists, design qualification tests, and provide actionable feedback.
• Investigate user language complaints and provide linguistic analysis.
• Help design experiments and evaluations, explain linguistic phenomena to varied audiences, and use AI to improve workflows.

Requirements

• Deep familiarity with the cultural and professional context of Japanese, typically gained through education or substantial experience in Japan.
• English fluency at C1+ level.
• Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, translation, foreign languages, language teaching, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience in translation, localization, linguistics, education, or a related field.
• Knowledge of reputable Japanese linguistic resources and research best practices.
• Strong communication skills, independence, teamwork, and the ability to explain complex linguistic matters clearly.

Nice to have

• Native-level Japanese proficiency.
• Experience with AI prompting or an understanding of LLMs, NLP, AI, or AI-led workflows.
