TL;DR
Scientific Programmer (Clinical IT) (HL7/DICOM/PACS): Developing secure clinical applications and scientific IT systems for NIA research operations with an accent on clinical data integration, multi-tier application development, and database engineering. Focus on implementing DevSecOps practices, supporting laboratory and clinical systems, and protecting research software through OWASP and US-CERT standards.

Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States

Salary: $115,000–$120,000 per year

What you will do

  • Design, code, debug, implement, and maintain stand-alone, web-based, and multi-tier applications supporting NIA's Intramural Research Program.
  • Develop responsive application frontends with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and backends with Perl, PHP, or Ruby and SQL databases.
  • Integrate and support clinical applications using HL7, DICOM, and PACS protocols.
  • Work within a DevSecOps-based Agile methodology, manage requirements, and apply secure coding practices based on OWASP and US-CERT standards.
  • Support scientific computation devices, laboratory applications, clinical IT systems, and research operations across NIA facilities.
  • Maintain configuration management with Puppet, produce technical documentation, and coordinate training and planning with developers and end users.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Health Information, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in clinical application programming or health IT systems development.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Perl, PHP or Ruby, and Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Proficiency with HL7, DICOM, PACS, Git, Puppet, and DevSecOps-based Agile development.
  • Experience supporting laboratory sciences and working with Windows, macOS, Linux, Unix, and other operating systems; familiarity with HPC environments.
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Nice to have

  • Clinical research IT experience in a federal government, NIH, or academic medical research environment.
  • Agile or DevSecOps certification and experience with data repositories or scientific databank interfaces.
  • Strong scripting skills with Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Familiarity with FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP-authorized cloud platforms, and NIH STRIDES services.
