Staff Software Engineer

Location: Remote within the United States; currently not hiring in Hawaii

Salary: $192,000–$240,000 annual base salary, plus equity; no bonus

What you will do

• Build and evolve scalable referral pathways for partners and referral-focused patient experiences.
• Design and maintain systems for referral management, partner data management, and patient booking.
• Shape technical direction, bring structure to ambiguous problems, and make durable architecture decisions.
• Lead complex technical projects across teams, aligning scope and execution with business goals.
• Collaborate with engineering managers, product managers, designers, engineers, partners, and stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers, unblock peers, raise technical standards, and use AI-assisted development tools to improve delivery.

Requirements

• 8+ years of related professional software engineering experience.
• Deep understanding of modern application architecture, API design patterns, security, performance, and scaling.
• Experience designing and evolving system architectures, evaluating trade-offs, and selecting appropriate solutions.
• Proven ability to lead complex technical projects across teams and align technical decisions with business goals.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to build positive relationships with partners and stakeholders.
• Fluency with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, including understanding their value, risks, and need for human judgment.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or comparable work experience.
• Familiarity with modern infrastructure and tooling.
• Experience developing distributed systems, especially event-based systems.
• Experience integrating systems with third parties and troubleshooting complex production issues.
• Experience in early-stage or high-growth startup environments.
