Mechanical Designer (Co-op/Intern)

Location: Onsite in Ottawa, Canada. The 8-month co-op term runs from January 2027 to August 2027.

Pay range: $24–35 per hour.

What you will do

• Develop precision production tooling designs for optical communication products.
• Prepare fully documented part and assembly drawings using 3D solid CAD tools such as Solid Edge.
• Apply mechanical engineering and manufacturing principles to develop solutions and assess alternative concepts.
• Compile design requirements, deliver detailed design documentation, and evaluate the performance of realized designs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D colleagues to optimize tooling performance, manufacturability, and cost.
• Gain exposure to opto-mechanical design, electronics packaging, Finite Element Methods, and Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
• Third- or fourth-year student in a Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree program.
• Proficiency in producing part and assembly drawings compliant with ANSI drafting standards.
• Proficiency with a 3D solid modeling mechanical CAD tool such as SolidWorks or Solid Edge.
• Knowledge of metal machining, machined-part design, engineering materials, and structural mechanics.
• Strong design judgment, engineering skills, and attention to detail.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing practices.
• Experience with engineering document management and Product Lifecycle Management systems.
• Knowledge of sheet metal, injection-molded plastics, electronic and optical assemblies, and Design for Manufacturability.
