Principal Backend Engineer (C#/.NET)

Location: Remote within the UK; candidates must already be based in the UK and have the right to work there. Visa sponsorship and relocation are not available.

What you will do

• Shape backend engineering strategy, architecture, technical direction, and engineering principles.
• Guide the evolution of a mature C#/.NET Framework monolith and modern C#/.NET and TypeScript services.
• Review designs and architectural decisions, identify risks, and challenge unnecessary complexity.
• Coach and mentor engineers, improving their technical skills, judgement, and decision-making.
• Champion security, testing, observability, resilience, performance, quality, and maintainability.
• Work with the CTO and engineering teams to balance long-term engineering quality with short-term business needs, contributing directly to implementation when useful.

Requirements

• Deep backend engineering expertise with strong commercial C#/.NET experience.
• Strong knowledge of software architecture, distributed systems, API design, and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience working with mature legacy applications and modernising large platforms pragmatically.
• Strong cloud architecture experience, ideally with Azure, plus knowledge of databases, security, testing, and software delivery.
• Experience shaping engineering practices across teams and mentoring or coaching experienced engineers.
• Excellent communication, technical judgement, and ability to influence through collaboration rather than authority.

Nice to have

• Commercial TypeScript backend experience.
• Cloudflare or edge technology experience.
• Experience with SaaS platforms at scale, financial services, insurance, or another regulated industry.
• Observability, platform engineering, or SRE experience.
• AI-assisted development and engineering productivity tooling experience.
