Engineering Manager Software & AI

Location: Fully remote for candidates on the US East Coast, or fully remote/hybrid in Germany, with office options in Wietmarschen-Lohne, Osnabrück, or Bremen. Travel to approximately 2 workshops per year in the US and 2–3 per year in Germany is required.

What you will do

• Lead and mentor a distributed US engineering team of 13 engineers across AI/ML, cloud backend, frontend, and DevOps.
• Conduct 1:1s, manage performance, support career development, and build a high-trust learning culture.
• Plan milestones, clear blockers, manage delivery cadence, and ensure reliable execution.
• Drive engineering excellence through CI/CD, cloud automation, AI assistance, code reviews, monitoring, and documentation.
• Coordinate operations between the US engineering team, German leadership, and California branch management.
• Contribute to architecture discussions and scale lightweight processes across international time zones.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience and 2+ years managing cross-disciplinary technical teams.
• Strong expertise in at least one of AI/ML systems, cloud backend, or DevOps, with working fluency across the others.
• Experience with hiring, coaching, performance management, and building psychological safety in remote or distributed teams.
• Excellent cross-cultural communication, stakeholder management, delivery management, prioritization, delegation, and trade-off decision-making skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI/ML, or a related technical discipline.
• Excellent English communication is required; candidates must be based on the US East Coast or in Germany.

Nice to have

• Production experience with AI/ML systems or high-reliability cloud and edge architectures.
• Experience in regulated or safety-critical industrial sectors.
• Familiarity with AI governance frameworks such as the EU AI Act.
