Recording Head Mechanical Process Development - Staff Engineer (Onsite) (Manufacturing)

Location: Bloomington, Minnesota, United States; onsite Monday–Friday during core business hours. Travel up to 10%.

Estimated base salary: $109,400–$159,500 per year, depending on location, skills, experience, and education.

What you will do

• Architect, design, and develop advanced row bar lapping processes and equipment for sub-nanometer dimensional control and angstrom-level surface finishes.
• Lead root-cause analysis, experimentation, process learning, and concept validation using data analysis across multiple process areas.
• Work with internal equipment teams and external suppliers to develop, prototype, integrate, and prepare first-of-kind tools for production.
• Collaborate with controls, software, vision, automation, inspection, and process-control engineers on production-ready systems.
• Translate recording head product requirements, KPIVs, and process interactions into equipment, process, and system specifications.
• Deliver validated solutions, engineering documentation, and transfer packages for global volume manufacturing teams, including the Thailand-based site.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of experience, Master’s degree with 6+ years, PhD with 3+ years, or equivalent education and experience.
• Experience with high-precision process and equipment design, development, qualification, and manufacturing.
• Strong communication, organization, independent judgment, and ability to manage multiple projects.
• Ability to supervise the activities of others without direct people management responsibility.
• Ability to understand engineering principles behind manufacturing processes and related software applications.

Nice to have

• Experience with COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB, Python, or JMP for modeling, simulation, statistical analysis, or process optimization.
• Experience in lapping or polishing within the semiconductor or HDD industry.
• Experience developing or designing manufacturing equipment.
