Principal Systems Engineer, Enterprise Backup & Disaster Recovery Solutions

Location: San Diego, California, United States

Annual base salary: $132,700–$182,000, plus a target annual bonus of 30% and eligibility for an equity-based long-term incentive program.

What you will do

• Lead the enterprise backup and recovery program across AWS, Azure, on-premises, hybrid, laboratory, and scientific infrastructure.
• Design and implement backup architectures for compute, storage, databases, servers, instruments, and data stores.
• Build foundational disaster recovery capabilities for Tier 1 systems, including architectures, replication, runbooks, and recovery procedures.
• Define service tiers and RTO/RPO targets, plan recurring tabletop and full failover exercises, and remediate recovery gaps.
• Automate backup validation, DR failover and failback, recovery testing, and evidence collection.
• Partner with Infrastructure, Cloud, Network, Scientific Systems, Cybersecurity, and risk teams while mentoring engineers and supporting audits.

Requirements

• Relevant bachelor's degree with 6+ years of progressive systems engineering experience, including 3+ years focused on backup, recovery, and DR; alternatively, a related master's degree with 4+ years of experience or 10+ years of relevant combined education and experience.
• Hands-on experience building and operating enterprise backup and DR capabilities across cloud and on-premises or hybrid environments.
• Experience with AWS and Azure backup solutions and platforms such as NetApp, Veeam, Commvault, AWS Backup, or Azure Backup.
• Experience designing DR architecture, replication, failover/failback procedures, RTO/RPO governance, recurring DR exercises, restore testing, SOPs, and audit-ready evidence.
• Working knowledge of Linux, Windows, storage, virtualization, databases, laboratory or scientific systems, GxP, SOX, business continuity standards, ITIL, and ServiceNow.
• Automation and scripting experience with Python, Bash, PowerShell, or equivalent, together with strong analytical, communication, leadership, collaboration, and mentoring skills.

Nice to have

• Working experience with Veeam Backup.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Veeam VMCE, Certified Business Continuity Professional, or equivalent certification.
