Staff Systems Engineer - Operational Readiness and Field Safety (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Remote US or Remote Canada; office locations in Dallas, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto.

Salary: $189,000–$242,000 USD yearly, plus discretionary equity incentives and annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Lead field safety by establishing escalation processes, responding to fleet issues, and owning incident response.
• Define and conduct operational readiness testing and create evidence for the readiness framework.
• Develop protocols for nominal and off-nominal situations, including severe weather, sensor degradation, connectivity outages, and trip interruptions.
• Establish field safety monitoring processes, safety indicators, and supporting tooling.
• Analyze operational trends and field events to drive safety improvements across development and operations.
• Support incident response training, operational preparedness, regulatory engagement, and industry standards discussions.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field; an advanced degree is preferred.
• 7+ years of experience in safety-critical system development, validation, or operations.
• Strong systems engineering knowledge, including requirements decomposition, verification and validation, and hazard analysis techniques such as HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, and STPA.
• Familiarity with ISO 26262, ISO 21448/SOTIF, and UL 4600.
• Experience monitoring safety metrics and designing and executing test plans for complex autonomous or robotic systems.
• Strong technical communication and project management skills, with experience coordinating across technical teams and making high-stakes engineering decisions.

Nice to have

• Autonomous vehicle safety validation or deployment experience.
• Experience in trucking, logistics, or commercial vehicle operations.
• Experience with operational safety management systems.
• Knowledge of FMVSS, SAE standards, and state or provincial autonomous vehicle regulations.
