TL;DR
Senior SOTIF Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles) (SOTIF/Functional Safety): Evaluating and improving the safety and reliability of autonomous trucking systems with an accent on risk assessment, safety requirements, and verification and validation strategies. Focus on leading SOTIF evaluations, identifying functional insufficiencies and triggering conditions, deriving acceptance criteria, and integrating safety considerations into autonomous vehicle specifications.
Location: Remote within the U.S., with listed locations in Ann Arbor, MI; Fort Worth, TX; and Blacksburg, VA.
Salary: $177,300–$212,800 USD annually, plus potential bonus and stock options.

What you will do
- Lead SOTIF evaluations and guide engineering teams in meeting SOTIF acceptance criteria.
- Identify functional insufficiencies and triggering conditions, conduct HIRE risk analyses, and define safety improvements.
- Develop verification and validation targets for known and unknown safety scenarios.
- Collaborate with functional safety, systems, AI-ML, software, design, architecture, mapping, product, and V&V teams.
- Integrate SOTIF considerations into autonomous trucking specifications and support safe vehicle deployment strategies.
- Communicate SOTIF achievement metrics and risk assessments to management and stakeholders.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of relevant experience.
- Expertise applying ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO-PAS 8800 (Safety and AI), and ISO 26262 in complex engineering environments.
- Experience with automotive, heavy-duty truck, or aerospace products and industries.
- Strong analytical, project management, leadership, communication, and risk assessment skills.
- Ability to derive safety requirements, define verification and validation strategies, work through ambiguity, and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Role is remote within the U.S. or based at one of the listed U.S. locations.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of AI-ML techniques.
- Software development experience with C++, Python, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Working knowledge of Jama, CAMEO, or JIRA.
- Experience in SAFe Agile environments.
