Senior SW Safety Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Remote or office-based in the United States, the United Kingdom, and selected European and Canadian locations; Atlanta is hybrid, South San Francisco is onsite, and Boston, Florida, New York City, Texas, Toronto, Vancouver, and the United Kingdom are remote.

Salary: $160K–$180K in San Francisco or New York, plus equity.

What you will do

• Perform hazard identification and risk assessments, including HARA, FMEA, FTA, and STPA, across autonomous software architecture and vehicle operations.
• Derive, specify, and trace functional, technical, and software safety requirements for supervised and driverless autonomy.
• Analyze perception, motion planning, localization, and vehicle-control modules under ISO 26262-6 and SOTIF.
• Define monitoring and fail-safe mechanisms for multi-core and Linux/RTOS software environments.
• Collaborate with systems, software, robotics, hardware, and test teams to integrate and verify safety requirements.
• Support safety-case artifacts, verification evidence, and safety performance indicators for commercial airport deployment.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on safety engineering experience in autonomous vehicles, automotive, aerospace, or industrial safety.
• Experience with autonomous driving systems or mobile robotics.
• 5+ years of software development or software safety experience with C++, Python, or ROS/ROS2.
• Deep understanding of software safety lifecycles, ASIL decomposition, unit and integration testing, and static analysis tools.
• Experience analyzing autonomous vehicle software pipelines, including perception, planning, and fail-safe state machines.
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
