TL;DR
Senior IT Systems Engineer (Defense Technology): Building, integrating, operating, and securing physical and virtual IT systems for U.S. government defense programs with an accent on infrastructure engineering, network operations, automation, and security compliance. Focus on leading engineering workflows, hardening air-gapped systems, preparing DISA STIG checklists and RMF assessments, and resolving complex virtualization and networking challenges.

Location: Fully onsite in Arlington, VA; the role may also be based in San Diego, CA. Travel of up to 25% may be required. Applicants must currently possess an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

Salary: $135,000–$273,000 per year; additional ranges of $135,000–$231,000 and $164,000–$273,000 may apply based on experience, skills, and education.

What you will do

  • Lead, mentor, and assign work to systems and network engineers while establishing engineering standards and workflows.
  • Architect, design, install, and provision physical and virtual server and networking equipment.
  • Operate and maintain servers running Red Hat, Windows, and VMware products, including updates, patches, and software installations.
  • Implement security processes, manage permissions, harden systems, and maintain DISA STIG compliance for RMF assessments.
  • Develop and maintain operating system images and virtual machines for business-area activities.
  • Create and maintain detailed systems and network documentation for technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience, plus 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading technical teams or directing engineering workflows, including work supporting the Department of Defense.
  • Extensive VMware or similar virtualization experience and the ability to troubleshoot complex network issues.
  • Experience with Bash, C, or Python scripting; TCP/IP, TCP, UDP, VLANs, DHCP, routing, physical device provisioning, and virtual machine installation.
  • Experience hardening devices, updating DISA STIG checklists, and patching or remediating vulnerabilities in closed or air-gapped networks.
  • Security+, CCNA, or equivalent IAT Level II certification, with the ability to work onsite in Arlington, VA and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

Nice to have

  • Strong knowledge of Red Hat or similar Linux distributions and tactical-system networking.
  • Cisco switching experience, including Virtual Port Channeling, VLANs, and VRFs.
  • Experience with PKI, multiple authentication methods, VMware NSX-T, Ruckus devices, or configuration automation tools such as Ansible, PowerShell, Chef, Salt, or Puppet.
