TL;DR
Automation Project Engineer (Robotics): Developing, supporting, and optimizing plantwide robotic and automation applications in a manufacturing environment with an accent on troubleshooting, system upgrades, and new technology introduction. Focus on designing robotic solutions, leading installations and enhancements, and resolving complex production issues across Body, Paint, and General Assembly operations.

Location: Flint, Michigan, United States; onsite with full-time plant attendance

Immigration sponsorship is not available, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, and J-1 support. The role requires occasional off-shift and non-production-hours work and up to 25% travel. No relocation benefits are provided.

What you will do

  • Develop, support, troubleshoot, and optimize robotic and automation applications across Body, Paint, and General Assembly operations.
  • Lead robotic projects involving new installations, technology enhancements, operational improvements, repairs, and replacements.
  • Support automation system startup, reprogramming, diagnostics, recovery procedures, maintenance activities, and system optimization.
  • Analyze manufacturing system requirements and design effective robotic solutions aligned with GM Global Standards.
  • Provide technical direction to vendors and integrators while collaborating with production, maintenance, skilled trades, engineering, and robotics execution teams.
  • Support throughput improvement, business plan deployment, launches, issue resolution, and lessons-learned activities.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as an automation controls engineer, robotics engineer, manufacturing engineer, or robot programmer.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge and hands-on troubleshooting experience with robotics and automation systems in manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with Fanuc 2D and 3D vision sensors.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future company immigration sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Basic or advanced vision experience.
  • Experience developing or implementing GM Global Standards, including GCCH, GCCS, and GRS.
  • Experience applying AI or machine learning in robotics.
  • Experience developing autonomous mobile robots, including mapping and obstacle avoidance.
  • Familiarity with GMIT manufacturing IT systems.
