Lead Controls Engineer (Energy Storage)

What you will do

• Lead controls-related activities for operational battery energy storage system projects across the EMEA region.
• Serve as the primary controls subject matter expert for customers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot complex controls, software, and system integration issues and lead root cause analyses.
• Oversee software and firmware upgrades, including testing, safe deployment, and change management.
• Coordinate grid code compliance testing and prioritize controls improvement initiatives and software enhancements.
• Maintain controls documentation, deployment records, and functional descriptions while driving data-informed process improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
• 6+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation, software, or power systems in utilities, renewable energy, energy storage, or a related industry.
• Strong knowledge of power systems, grid codes, EMS applications, and grid services.
• Experience with SCADA, PLCs, RTUs, SEL and Siemens protection or automation equipment, and industrial protocols including IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and TCP/IP.
• Proficiency in Linux, Python, Bash or Shell scripting, and GitHub-based version control.
• Fluent English required; German and other European languages are advantageous. Customer-facing communication and complex technical problem-solving skills are also required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Simulink, model-based engineering, and C/C++.
• Knowledge of high-voltage equipment such as inverters, transformers, controllers, telecommunications, and I/O systems.
• Experience with CMMS platforms and using operational data for continuous improvement.
