Head of Materials Science (Robotics)

Location: On-site in San Carlos, CA

Salary: $237,000 – $290,000

What you will do

• Own the materials roadmap for NEO, focusing on reducing weight and cost while improving safety and durability.
• Lead and develop a team of materials engineers to execute qualification plans and test rigor.
• Design and build internal lab and test capabilities to accelerate material iteration cycles.
• Manage supplier relationships for specialized materials to ensure production scalability and risk mitigation.
• Collaborate with mechanical design, manufacturing, and safety partners to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in materials science or materials engineering.
• Proven track record of qualifying materials into high-volume production (structural composites, high-strength alloys, or elastomers).
• Experience with fatigue, impact, and environmental testing of structural or soft materials.
• Demonstrated ability to manage supplier relationships for specialized hardware materials.
• Advanced degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience in robotics, automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics hardware.
• Exposure to skin-like elastomers, tactile sensor integration, or soft-material systems.
• Familiarity with thermal interface materials and high-voltage insulation.
• Experience building a materials lab or test capability from scratch.
