System Design Engineer (SATCOM)

Location: Carlsbad, California, United States. This is a US Government role requiring US citizenship and an active United States Secret Clearance. Travel may be required up to 10%.

Salary: $120,500–$190,000 annually. For specific locations in San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the New York City metropolitan area: $149,500–$224,500 annually.

What you will do

• Generate and manage product and system requirements.
• Define system-level architectures and detailed system design solutions.
• Break down high-level product requirements into system and subsystem designs in collaboration with Product Management, engineering leads, and customers.
• Iterate on system designs with engineering development teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Design solutions across data platforms, backend services, cloud architectures, SATCOM systems, and networking infrastructure.
• Maintain standards for large systems of systems to support intersystem compatibility and future scaling.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in systems engineering design and requirements management, preferably involving data platforms, cloud-based applications, satellite communications, or networking.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Strong understanding of full-stack development frameworks.
• Ability to develop system requirements covering performance, security, and functionality.
• Experience ensuring system architecture meets customer needs while preserving implementation flexibility.
• US citizenship and an active United States Secret Clearance are required.

Nice to have

• Understanding of agile software development processes.
• Knowledge of Department of War CONOPs, users, and operating environments.
• Familiarity with data science, data processing, or AI/ML.
• Experience facilitating design tradeoff discussions with engineering and product management teams.
• Familiarity with Jama, MBSE processes, or Cameo.
