Plant Optimization Engineer (Manufacturing)

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, at a corrugated box plant facility; onsite work with first-, second-, or third-shift assignments during production rotations and travel as necessary.

Salary: $83,000–$86,000 per year, plus an annual bonus based on individual contribution and company performance.

What you will do

• Rotate through departments at a corrugated plant while completing assigned learning objectives and technical training.
• Organize and implement moderate to large process improvements, problem-elimination initiatives, and capital or expense projects focused on asset health and plant reliability.
• Develop and implement solutions to improve equipment, facility, and plant operations.
• Complete process optimization projects involving scrap reduction, throughput improvements, downtime reduction, and engineering support across plant functions.
• Collaborate with Plant Optimization Engineers, plant leadership, machine operators, and maintenance operators.
• Attend POE conferences and off-site training while working with a mentor or manager to develop a career path.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is required before starting the position.
• 0–2 years of engineering experience, including internships and co-ops, providing technical support in a manufacturing plant or industrial environment.
• Ability to work first, second, or third shift during production department rotations.
• Self-driven approach and interest in hands-on manufacturing work.
• Ability to travel as necessary and valid documents for air and car travel.
• Solid interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for working with production teams, management, and employees across the company.
• Strong listening, evaluation, problem-solving, alternative-solution, deadline-management, leadership, networking, and relationship-building skills.
• Previous team experience or a strong understanding of open communication and information sharing between team members.
• Ability to learn quickly and apply new knowledge in practice.

Nice to have

• At least one internship or co-op, especially in a manufacturing environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Paper Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Engineering Technology. Other engineering majors may be considered depending on experience.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, shop-floor software, maintenance work-order systems, or similar manufacturing systems.
• Experience with Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or Statistical Process Control.
