Lead CNC Machinist (Defense Manufacturing)

Location: Onsite in Thomaston, Connecticut, United States. U.S. Person status is required to comply with defense contract regulations.

Salary: $40–$44 per hour.

What you will do

• Lead and mentor CNC machinists while enforcing setup procedures, machining standards, and safety protocols.
• Set up and operate multi-axis CNC lathes, vertical turret lathes, 5-axis mill-turn centers, and cylindrical grinding machines.
• Optimize CNC programs, tooling, workholding, offsets, and grinding operations to improve tool life, part quality, and spindle utilization.
• Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, and work instructions for precision components.
• Coordinate in-process and final inspections using manual metrology tools, touch probes, and CMMs.
• Collaborate with engineering, programming, production, and quality teams to troubleshoot issues, maintain equipment, and meet production schedules.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or formal machining training is preferred.
• 7–10 years of experience setting up and operating multi-axis CNC machines in a precision manufacturing environment, including VTLs and/or 5-axis mill-turn equipment.
• Shop-floor leadership experience with the ability to train, motivate, and direct machinists.
• Advanced knowledge of GD&T, tight-tolerance machining, inspection methods, and manual and automated measurement systems.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• U.S. Person status required.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with FANUC, Siemens, or OSP (Okuma) CNC controls.
• Experience in an ISO 9001 or defense manufacturing environment.
• Technical certification or formal machining training.
