Design Release Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan; report to the specific location at least 3 times per week. Travel up to 25% to domestic and international suppliers and GM plants.

What you will do

• Lead production design release, component sourcing, and launch activities for engine cylinder heads and head gaskets.
• Generate and execute technical solutions, perform complex design analysis, and evaluate engineering designs.
• Manage engineering changes, PPAP, part release, and implementation at manufacturing plants and suppliers.
• Collaborate with casting, machining, and gasket suppliers to improve manufacturing quality and reduce defects.
• Conduct supplier audits and capability studies, drive corrective actions, and support validation on dyno and vehicle programs.
• Lead root cause analysis and containment for field and warranty issues while communicating risks and resolution plans to cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering field.
• At least 5 years of experience in automotive component release, quality, or manufacturing; powertrain experience is preferred.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical reporting skills.
• Experience with engineering change management and supplier quality processes.
• Ability to influence cross-functional teams and suppliers to improve quality, timing, and cost.

Nice to have

• Direct experience with engine cylinder heads and head gaskets, casting and machining, or stamping and coating processes.
• Knowledge of PPAP, APQP, automotive quality standards, DFMEA, and structured problem-solving methods.
• Experience with Teamcenter or similar PLM tools, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and CAE methods.
