Staff Product Engineer (Payments)

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate backend systems for money movement, benefit spending, account verification, transaction processing, and reconciliation.
• Lead complex initiatives from discovery and technical design through implementation, release, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Make architectural decisions balancing reliability, security, compliance, maintainability, speed, and user experience.
• Build resilient financial infrastructure with guarantees for correctness, idempotency, auditability, observability, and failure recovery.
• Investigate production issues, maintain monitoring and incident response practices, and contribute to frontend development when needed.
• Review code, mentor engineers, collaborate with product and business stakeholders, and use AI coding tools with sound technical judgment.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong backend development and technical ownership.
• 2+ years of experience in fintech, payments, banking, benefits administration, or another financial transaction or regulated-workflow domain.
• Strong proficiency in Python, backend architecture, APIs, data modeling, distributed systems, SQL, and relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
• Experience with payment concepts such as transactions, ledgers, reconciliation, KYB/KYC, account verification, ACH or card payments, and payment operations.
• Experience designing production systems with robust monitoring, alerting, logging, incident response, and failure recovery.
• Strong product judgment, communication, ownership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Django and Django REST Framework.
• Experience designing financial data models, ledger systems, reconciliation processes, or transaction-processing workflows.
• Compliance-aware engineering experience in fintech, healthcare, benefits, payroll, banking, or insurance.
• Familiarity with React or Vue and startup or high-growth company experience.
